Lamothe Law Firm Files Lawsuit Against Prison Guard for Prisoner Suicide

by Julien G. Lamothe

On July 25, 2022, Frank Lamothe and Julien Lamothe of the New Orleans-based Lamothe Law Firm, LLC, filed a Civil Rights Complaint against a prison guard from the Elayn Hunt Correctional Facility and the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections for the suicide of an inmate.

The lawsuit alleges that the prison guard, Samantha Joubert, knew that the inmate was at risk of suicide, but disregarded that risk by providing the inmate with a bedsheet and by knowingly failing to make routine rounds to monitor the inmate on suicide watch. The lawsuit also alleges that Samantha Joubert knowingly falsified the cell block logbook by documenting that she made the routine rounds when she did not.

Samantha Joubert was arrested on June 14, 2022 for malfeasance in office and falsifying public documents in connection with the inmate’s suicide.

The lawsuit also brings claims against the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections due to its control and operation of the correctional facility.

The lawsuit is pending in the United State District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana.
