Deadline for Justice – Childhood Sexual Assault Claims

Deadline for Justice: Uncovering clergy abuse cases in SWLA
A KPLC7, Lake Charles, LA Special Report

In 2021, the Louisiana legislature unanimously passed the “Lookback” law.  Under Louisiana Act 386, adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse have an extended window until June 2027 to file civil sex abuse lawsuits against their perpetrator, no matter how long ago the abuse occurred.

Lamothe Law Firm attorney Kristi Schubert participated in this special report from KPLC7 about the “Lookback” law.

Kristi Schubert explains, “What this means to survivors is validation.  It’s a jury of their peers saying, we see you, we believe you, what happened to you is wrong, and we are going to do something about it.”

“I’ve seen so much good come from the lookback window.  Not only just seeing survivors get the support they have always needed, but also I have seen active child predators caught and put in jail because of the lookback window.  I think there is still a lot to do, but we are absolutely making progress and I would like to see that progress continue.”

Representative Mandie Landry is currently sponsoring a bill in the Louisiana congress to extend the lookback another two years, through 2029.
