New Orleans clergy abuse survivors propose $1 billion to settle claims

Investigative reporter Aubry Killion of WDSU-TV reports that New Orleans Archdiocese abuse survivors have proposed that $1 billion will be needed to settle all of the claims.

The committee that represents 550 survivors has proposed the $1 billion figure. Most of these funds would come from insurance.

The archdiocese has assigned insurance coverage funds to a trust. Their settlement proposal is $62.5 million plus the insurance settlement.

Lamothe Law Firm attorney Kristi Schubert was featured in the WDSU article:

“Attorney Kristi Schubert is representing 70 clergy survivors. ‘The time for apologies has passed,’ Schubert said.”

“Schubert said under the committees proposal the diocese could still have funding to move forward and operate. She expects it will take a year or more to finalize a plan. Schubert said more transparency is needed.”

“‘Apologies without action are just manipulation. Right now, all I have seen are empty words,’ Schubert said.”

New legislation enables adults subjected to childhood sexual assault in Louisiana to file lawsuits against their perpetrators and the churches, schools, youth athletic leagues, medical facilities, and other organizations that enabled the wrongdoing.
