Clergy Abuse Survivors Taken Off Negotiating Committee by Judge in New Orleans Archdiocese Bankruptcy

David Hammer / WWL Louisiana Investigator, Ramon Antonio Vargas / The Guardian: Clergy abuse survivors call for judge’s removal in Archdiocese bankruptcy case.

“Clergy abuse survivors who were ousted from a committee trying to negotiate a settlement to resolve the New Orleans Catholic archdiocese’s bankruptcy say they have lost their confidence in the judge presiding over the case after she ignored US justice department recommendations against expelling them.”

The Judge, Meredith Grabill, removed 4 clergy abuse survivors from the negotiating committee of the Archdiocese of New Orleans bankruptcy after asking the Justice Department to investigate their attorney, Richard Trahant.

“Grabill’s punishments against Trahant and his clients are widely seen (as) among the most consequential decisions issued during the New Orleans archdiocese’s unusually tortuous Chapter 11 reorganization.”

New legislation enables adults subjected to childhood sexual assault in Louisiana to file lawsuits against their perpetrators and the churches, schools, youth athletic leagues, medical facilities, and other organizations that enabled the wrongdoing.
