Lamothe Law Firm attorney Kristi Schubert was featured in news articles regarding the excommunication of Scott Peyton from the Catholic Church. Mr. Peyton’s son had been sexually abused by a priest as a minor. The Peyton family spoke out about the abuse and filed a lawsuit against the church. Mr. Peyton called the actions to excommunicate him “very malicious”, adding that “he has seen no indication the diocese ever sought to excommunicate any of the more than 40 priests and deacons whom it has included on the organization’s list of credibly accused child molesters.”
Ex-Louisiana deacon whose son was sexually abused by a priest is excommunicated from church, was written by Ramon Antonio Vargas, The Guardian. “The diocese of Lafayette has crossed a new line,” Schubert said. “When you discourage survivors from speaking out, you miss opportunities to uncover hidden child predators.”
From the New York Times, written by Emily Schmall: Former Deacon Excommunicated After His Son Is Sexually Abused by a Priest: A Louisiana priest was convicted in the sexual abuse of the ex-deacon’s son. What followed was a lawsuit and now the Catholic Church’s highest censure. Kristi Schubert said, “Excommunicating Scott Peyton sends a message to abuse survivors that speaking out against child sex abusers is not safe to do.”
