Widespread Sexual Violence at 33 Universities

by Frank E. Lamothe, III

A recent survey of 33 major universities conducted by the Association of American Universities shows that a quarter of undergraduate women reported nonconsensual sexual contact and 6.8% of male undergraduates. There was a 2015 study that showed 20% of the women reported nonconsensual sexual contact. The increase is attributed to more sexual assaults, more students understanding what sexual assault is and students feeling more comfortable in speaking out. Most victims still hesitate to report assaults to those offices dedicated to providing aid. This may be due to shame, embarrassment or feeling they could handle the situation themselves.
